Gloucestershire College, Forest of Dean Campus
Gloucestershire Colleges new Forest of Dean Campus recently opened its doors to students, offering a highly sustainable facility with award winning architectural design by Roberts Limbrick Architects and boasting panoramic views over the Steam Mills lake. Working with Barnwood Limited, Axiom Building Services Limited were responsible for the design and installation of the complete mechanical and electrical services.
The 7,200m² campus was to act as a catalyst for the Cinderford Northern Quarter development, and provides a state of the art building that can be shared by both the students and the local community.
The new campus provides facilities for both academic and vocational courses, as such there were many large open plan spaces, construction workshops, art and creative studios, a commercial catering training kitchen and even hair & beauty salons.
The building is situated on a site of national ecological importance populated by bats, newts, and dormice. This meant that every stage of development needed to be extremely sensitive to the surroundings and working with the ecologists team we reduced the ecological impact to the site by measures such as automated blinds to ‘blackout’ the building during twilight hours.
The building benefited from highly efficient HVAC plant and lighting A BMS system with metering was provided to manage operation and monitor usage. A large array of PV panels was installed on the roof to offset carbon emissions, and rainwater harvesting systems were also utilised to ensure the buildings environmental impact was further reduced.
